My Capsule Wardrobe Wishlist – McCall’s Spring 2019 Sewing Patterns!
McCall’s Patterns just released it’s Spring 2019 collection and there’s a lot to love! Many of the looks remind me of styles from my Pinterest boards and screenshots from my favorite fashion bloggers on Instagram. Combined, they make a well-rounded capsule wardrobe that’s great to wear to work or perfect to pack for vacation. Imagine using neutral fabrics to sew up a M7936 jumpsuit and M7920 dress for laid back and chic looks for the South of France or Martha’s Vineyard. Or, sewing with on-trend pastels and floral prints for romantic outfits with the M7937 set and M7925 dress for a weekend getaway or destination wedding at a fabulous resort. Even if you’re staying close to home, these are some nice styles to feel a little more special in every day. See all of my picks from the collection, styling advice and fabric recommendations below and let me know what you plan to sew and wear this Spring!
M7936, View B – Jumpsuit
Why I like it
- #1 – this looks so easy to make! The ‘Learn to Sew for Fun’ line is designed for the super beginner and has super detailed instructions which will make this jumpsuit much faster to make than the trending boiler suit with a lot of the style.
- It’s really laid back and comfortable but will make you look put together at a BBQ or day in the park, even if you’re sitting Indian style on a picnic blanket.
- Wear this playsuit belted with sandals or sneakers and a floppy hat.
Fabric
- Go for a natural look with solid linen, washed a few times to soften, or a linen blend designed for less wrinkles
- Keep this looking grown up with solids or simple prints like the wide stripes in this Sea Resort look
M7922, View D – Dress
Why I like it
- This twist front dress might see the rejuvenation of winter’s #sewtwistandties hashtag
- Another casual look, I see myself wearing this for a day of exploring the city with a pair of comfortable sneakers
Fabric
- Stick to natural fibers that will be breathable and keep you cool through the warmer spring and summer days as you’re out and about
- I think the twist will want a fabric with a bit of structure, so try a linen blend or chambray with this make rather than a flowy viscose crepe
M7934, View D – Flared Jeans
Why I like it
- These extreme flares are giving me TommyXZendaya 70’s vibes – manifestations of all of the beautiful Black divas she brought out for the fashion show
- Let’s be real – I’m not going to find a pair of extreme flares at my height so these are definitely fun pants for a tall girl to make!
Fabric
- Denim! Maybe even upcycled denim from some other garments at the thrift store for some groovy patchwork
- White denim would be insane – these aren’t the kind of pants you wear every day anyway
M7920, View D – Dress
Why I like it
- This is a very chic spring and summer office lewk that will show your curves but hide your skin
- Keep it professional and sew it at knee length or midi length and wear it with some cute espadrilles
Fabric
- I love the orange in the sketch and would make it in a warm colored or natural linen
- This could also be really interesting (but less office appropriate) in denim with a little bit of stretch (for a tight fit) and some cute embroidery
M7937, View B Top and View D Pants
Why I like it
- Give me outfit! This has the same shape as an outfit I spotted on SimplyCyn by Saylor
- The crop tops take 1 or fewer yards of fabric so you can easily make one with an off cut from another make. Scrap buster + sustainable = win!
Fabric
- To remake the look from Saylor, try guipure lace and trim over a cotton interlining (the original uses polyester)
- Gingham is another obvious choice and will give you a very preppy look
- You can edge it up a little bit, while staying to natural fibers, with mixed Ikat prints. See this look from Stefanie at The Style Safari for inspiration
M7925, View C – Dress
Why I like it
- This modest sun dress is well-suited for going to church on Sunday or exploring temples and cathedrals while traveling (I never have any thing like this in my suitcase and have to pay to wear the ugly cover-ups they hand out!)
- Though everything is covered up, the waistband will help to define the waist and create a nice silhouette with your figure
Fabric
- This view takes about 4 yards of fabric – use something lightweight and breathable so you’re not weighed down by the dress
- Viscose or silk crepe with a tropical novelty print would make a romantic look like this tunic dress from Agnona
- Cotton eyelet could be interesting with an interlining under the main shell and skin showing at the sleeves and lower tiers
M7296, View A Dress and View C Bodice
Why I like it
- This Create It! pattern lets you mix and match pieces to make sexy occasion dresses that can be worn for date night, cocktail parties, or spring weddings
- The instructions and plan call for a fully lined dress which is a quality professional touch for the home sewer
- I love the bodice of view C as a standalone top. I’d wear it cropped with my favorite high-waisted pants or lengthen a bit for versatility as a shirt. Wouldn’t that be groovy with the flared jeans?
Fabric
- The pattern calls for moderate stretch knits so stick with ponte or scuba.
- I wonder if a cut and sew sweater knit would work here – at least it could make a really cute try!
So, what will you sew?
