Ethical, Sustainable Clothing for Tall Women | Introducing Taylor Tall
At long last, there is an ethical, sustainable clothing brand for tall women! Introducing Taylor Tall – a conscious clothing line that’s making timeless wardrobe staples with custom fits for taller proportions. Several weeks ago founder Taylor McCleneghan slid into my Instagram DMs to answer my call for sustainable options for tall women. Since then, I’ve been excitedly learning more about how she and her husband and business partner, Nathaniel Cook, have been designing their product and building their company to meet the needs of women like me and Taylor who have always struggled in dressing rooms. While Taylor was visiting their fair trade factory in Mumbai, I caught up with her over a video conference. I asked how she got started in the fashion industry, how Taylor Tall is adapted to fit taller women, and what it means to be “consciously crafted.” Watch the interview below!
I was anxious to try Taylor Tall’s first collection on my 6’2″ frame. Could it really be as incredible as their mission for natural materials and construction that will last the test of time? Thankfully, Taylor let me sample the collection to see and feel for myself. I pulled together this outfit with two pieces I can wear again and again for all of my business casual needs.
My first pick was their Drop Shoulder Button Down in a white lightweight cotton with a subtle grid texture. Choosing a fit at TaylorTall.com takes 2 steps – first you select your size and then your length. The size for tops factors in a taller frame with slightly wider shoulders and a lower bust. The length then helps to make this collection work for styling and suiting tall women who are 5’7″ to 6’5″ and beyond. I measured from the highest point of my shoulder down to my high hip and chose their shortest length at 25″. Since I like to show my curves in high-waisted pants and skirts, the shorter length means I have just the right amount to tuck in or leave untucked. But this is still a tall shirt and, with the inclusion of pleats from the collarbone and gathers along the shoulder blades, it’s the first button down I’ve had in a long time that doesn’t gape open at the fullest part of my bust. Major win.
The pants I chose feature a subtle and sophisticated pattern in midnight herringbone which looks like a denim wash from afar but is very office appropriate up close. Like the top, customers can choose their custom inseam at lengths from 27″ to 33″ to hit just above the ankle. I ordered a 31″ inseam but I’ll aim for 32″ in the future to get a little closer to my ankle bone. The rise of these pants, though, is spot on for my frame. If you check my fit & modifications from any of my other pants makes, you’ll know that I generally have to add 2 extra inches in length to keep the curve of pants aligned with my bones and prevent an unfortunate muffin top look. The top of these high rise pants hit at the perfect spot on my hip bones – such a relief to find!
Taylor Tall backs up their dedication to the perfect fit in an unexpected but genius way. If you need to get your garment altered to fit you just right, they’ll offer a $15 tailoring and mending credit off of your next purchase. And not only does that little guarantee help to save your investment, but the pants are also constructed to facilitate easy alterations. Common in men’s trousers but rather unheard of in womenswear, Taylor Tall’s pants include an extra inch of seam allowance at the center back and run the seam line up through the waist band. My pair of size 8 pants fit perfectly around my waist but at the fullest part of my hips I want to let them out by about 1/2″ for a little more comfort. It’s great to know that tailoring credit is there for me if I make this curvy adjustment for my ‘Burgess hips’ now or if I eventually need to let out the pants to fit my ever-changing body. My hips are why I’ve almost always bought pants with a little stretch. However, fabrics with even 1% spandex cannot be recycled by traditional means and produce landfill waste and that doesn’t jive with my goals to make more sustainable fashion choices.
I’m very happy with my picks and these two pieces are going to take my wardrobe through all of the seasons. In September I mixed this shirt with my me-made high-waisted linen shorts and matched the pants with my reversible ankara crop top. Now that October is here and New York’s 90-degree days are numbered, I’m happy to be able to step into fall with this outfit. I styled the look with a thrifted purple wool Evan Picone blazer and burgundy patent leather loafers for a chilly weather business casual look. The outfit looks great with every jacket in my closet so it’s sure to get a lot of wear this fall before I transition to ankle boots and cozy sweaters.
So there is my sponsored but 100% honest review of Taylor Tall! Excellent quality clothing for tall women, made and shipped completely without polluting plastics, and thoughtfully presented to be wardrobe staples for months and years. I’m very happy to find another brand (and small business!) serving the diverse needs of tall women. Well-fitting clothes make you feel confident to bring your best self. Now we don’t have to compromise sustainability to get that confident fit!
